Image
Written By: Noah Cusack-Margolis Warrior Interview #6 Merrimack College has been on a role with committing players. Merrimack has 21 commits as of now and the numbers are expected to keep growing at a very fast rate. Merrimack recently received a commitment from ‘00 Nicholas Cherkowski who currently plays for the Vernon Vipers. I recently caught up with Nicholas to interview him on his commitment to Merrimack. Q: During your recruitment process what stood out to you when looking at Merrimack versus what other schools had to offer?  A: Things that stood out to while I was being recruited were the small school feel for example the small class sizes and closely knit community were draws for me. I was also drawn in by the drive and direction of the program. While I was there I felt that the whole program was really striving for more and wanted to become the best they could possibly be and I think that would be a culture I will fit in  well with.  Q: When you

Written By: Noah Cusack-Margolis Warrior Interview #5 The Merrimack College women's Lacrosse team lands a very solid commit from 02 goaltender Sam Preston. Preston currently plays for the  lax plus club team and Longmeadow (Mass) High school. I was lucky enough to interview Sam and talk to her about her recent commitment to Merrimack. Q: During your recruitment process what stood out to you when looking at Merrimack versus what other schools had to offer? A: During my recruitment process Merrimack really stood out to me versus what other schools had to offer. Some reasons include their lacrosse program, sports management major, small classes, and the campus size. Q:   When you received an offer from Merrimack did you know right away that’s the school I want to go to or did you wait a little bit before deciding on Merrimack? A: I already thought that Merrimack was the perfect fit for me so when I received an offer I was instantly excited and grateful.

Written By: Noah Cusack-Margolis Warrior interview #4 When you think of "big hockey schools" you would think of schools like Michigan or Wisconsin schools that get a lot of commitments for their hockey program. One team you wouldn't think about as being a big hockey school that gets a tone of commits is Merrimack college. I was told by someone that they are now referring to Merrimack as "The Wisconsin of the East" because they are receiving so many commits like bigger schools like Wisconsin and Michigan. Scott Borek the head coach of the warriors has been very aggressive when it comes to recruiting players. He is leading this new program in a very good direction. Every recruit has said that " I can tell that coach Borek is really passionate about bringing a couple of championship banners to Lawler." Mission Merrimack is the new frase they use around the locker room, Scott Borek introduced that saying during his introductory press conference. I

Merrimack Get's The Sweep

Image
Written By: Noah Cusack-Margolis Merrimack gets the sweep On Saturday night October 20th the Merrimack College men’s ice hockey program made history at Lawler Arena with a 4-0 shutout against Boston University. In the 118 matchups between the two team all-time meetings between the Warriors and Terriers, no Merrimack team has ever shutout the Terriers. Merrimack as well as BU are being coached by new coaches this season. (This season, Merrimack and BU are under direction from brand new coaching staff).  Merrimack is coached by Scott Borek who last worked at Providence as the assistant coach to Nate Leaman. Boston University’s head coach is not a new face in the locker room, but is new to the head coaching position. Albie O’Connell who is the new head coach of the Terriers was formerly David Quinn's assistant coach. In net for the Warriors, was senior goaltender Craig Pantano who saved all 34 shots by the Terriers. Pantano gets his second shutout of the season both o

Hillier commits to Merrimack

Written By Noah Cusack-Margolis Warrior Interview #3 It seems that the Merrimack College Men's ice hockey team has been able to get commitments from players who have been shown a lot of interest from the big name D1 schools. We have not seen this for a few years now but ever since Scott Borek has been hired as head coach we have been able to see a lot more top recruits commit to Merrimack College. Yesterday the Merrimack College ice hockey team continues to show that the big name recruits are starting to realize that Merrimack has the potential to become something big. Mark Hillier verbally committed to Merrimack College yesterday via Twitter. Hillier who is an '02 forward and a Newfoundland native currently plays for St. Andrews College. During his time playing in the CAHS and CISAA, Mark finished off last season with 23 goals and 22 assists as the only 15 year old on the varsity roster during the 2017-18 season. During his time playing in bantam hockey in the 2017 se

D1 Warriors

Written By: Noah Cusack-Margolis Warriors go D1 What was once a dream for most people in the Merrimack College community the day has finally come and that dream has finally became a reality. On Monday September 10th 2018 Merrimack College and the NEC (Northeast Conference) announced that the warriors will be making that long awaited jump to division one in all of Merrimack's varsity sports by joining the NEC, which was predicted for a long time by many sources over the past couple of years. Merrimack College has been dreaming of going division one in all sports for some time now and they have just been patiently waiting for the call saying that they are being offered a spot to join a division one conference. Although they have been talking about being a division one school for some time they also had to think logically. When Merrimack first started to talk about going D1 in all sport's they certainly were not the school  that they are today. Merrimack has been a powe

Severo commits to Merrimack

Written By Noah Cusack-Margolis Warrior Interview #2 When it comes to finding good recruits one must have his or her eye on the for a while sometimes even before you switch coaching jobs from one school to another, and that's exactly what Merrimack Head coach Scott Borek did. Another top recruit Merrimack received comes from an 01 forward Casey Severo a very good hockey player with a very good hockey IQ. Casey who recently played with Noble & Greenough School and played in 28 game for Noble and Greenough ending with a total of 29 points (14 Goals, 15 Assists). One independent scout described Casey as " One of the top uncommitted players in prep hockey" obviously this statement was made before Casey committed to Merrimack College. Casey who also has taken part in the USA hockey select camps the last 2 seasons. Casey also appeared in the select 16 camp last season and the select 17 camp this season. Neutral zone rated Casey 3.75 stars out of 5 in terms of a recrui

Written By Noah Cusack-Margolis Warrior interview #1 The Merrimack College men’s ice hockey program has been doing very well when it comes to bringing in top class recruits under the new head coach Scott Borek who was named head coach after former men’s ice hockey head coach Mark Dennehy was fired back in March. Dennehy spent 13 seasons with the warriors only appearing in one Hockey east championship game. One of Merrimacks commits comes from a 1998 born goaltender James Corcoran who will be arriving at merrimack in 2019. Corcoran who played for Walpole high school also played for the winchendon school was invited to the Boston Bruins development camp last summer. I interviewed Corcoran when he committed back in March, here are clips of the interview.  Q: You are a very good goaltender and I am sure that you got many division one offers, what stood out to you at merrimack that didn’t stand out at other schools? A: Well Merrimack was my first offer but it was the School t
